In Damascus, an Iraqi refugee boy stands beside his mother and her registration certificate from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Iraqi refugees must register with UNHCR to receive humanitarian aid like medical care and to be processed for resettlement in other countries like Canada. Because getting a visa to another country can take years, and because they are not allowed work permits in Syria, many Iraqi refugees in Syria have become increasingly destitute.
